Chapter 324

Simsbury, CT

Monthly Newsletter

May 2018

Hi all,

The weather cooperated for our monthly gathering on Wednesday and we had a great turnout!  Thank you to all who were able to attend.  Only one plane took to the skies, and, it was a little bumpy, still fun.  We fired up the grill, ate, had some beverages and talked aviation.

Dan went over the treasurer’s report, we are slowly building our balance back up.

We discussed the Young Eagles event coming up on May 19th (rain date June 2nd).  As a reminder to all pilots who are planning to fly, please be sure to complete the EAA background check if you haven’t already.  Forward a copy to Mark for the records.  Mark sent out an email with a link for pilots to register for the event.  Doing this should make our life easier that morning.  We decided to provide some light refreshments for kids and parents.  Probably cookies, juice and water.   We are expecting a decent turnout.  Chris and Luke Doskos are contacting some scouts, Greg is contacting Simsbury High aviation program.  All help is greatly appreciated, ground crew and pilots, thanks again.

We had a visit from Al Schmid.   Al introduced himself and brought with him a manuscript of his latest book, The Unlimited Sky.  Al has led an interesting life in aviation and decided to write about it.  Should be fun to read.  He left the manuscript with us to read and share.  Brad has put it into PDF format and I tried to send it to everyone, but, seems my email server wasn’t up to the task.  If anyone would like a copy of the PDF, please respond and I’ll try to send it out one at a time.    Please keep in mind, this is copyrighted material.  Al gave our chapter permission to read it, please don’t share the PDF beyond our members.

Mark is planning to place an order for EAA Chapter 324 shirts, please email him if you’d like to order.

Progress on the VMC club.  I need to take some web based training, then I should be able to schedule our first meeting.  Just to clear up some confusion, initially this will be a VMC club.  At some point later, we may also expand to include and IMC club.

Oshkosh!  It’s time to start planning for Oshkosh/Airventure.  Chapter 324 will have a dedicated campsite this year.  Please consider attending, contact Mark if you’d like to reserve space.  If you have any questions about flying in, camping, etc, please feel free to contact Mark or me.  If you like aviation, Oshkosh is a great time!

Vince has volunteered to be our chapter webmaster.  Vince has requested any and all types of aviation/chapter related info, photos, videos, etc. that he can possible use to post on the site.  If  you have anything that might be of interest, please send it to him.   Thanks Vince!

Projects-

Vince is done building ribs for his Legal Eagle.  He brought the jig he used, showed it to us.  Adam is especially interested as he is just starting a build.  Vince is being held up, waiting for a shipment of spruce.

Sal is waiting for the DAR to schedule inspection of his RV-12.

Greg spoke about the process and repairs needed on his RV-6A.  Repairs are under way and he hopes to be back in the air soon.

Dave- we’re looking forward to an update on your Cessna project!

I’m probably forgetting something, that’s what I get for waiting until Saturday to get these notes out.  Feel free to reply with anything I should have included.

See you at the Young Eagles rally on the 19th, if not before.

Thanks again, Blue skies and tailwinds,

Charlie
